Rooster Walk and FloydFest fans, listen up: Perennial fan favorites — psychedelic rock band Major and the Monbacks — are teaming up with internationally acclaimed producer, touring artist and Spacebomb Records founder Matthew E. White in April 2016 to record their sophomore full-length album. The new album will follow up the band’s independently produced debut album that was released in May 2015.
The band is currently taking a hiatus from touring to write and arrange songs for the new album.
From today’s press release: “The Monbacks will pair their raucous, horn-drenched rock n roll and songwriting sensibility with Matthew E. White’s signature use of psychedelic and orchestral landscapes. ‘The best aspects of each will shake hands somewhere in the middle,’ says guitarist Harry Slater. With White’s guidance and production expertise, the Monbacks are looking to define their own brand of psychedelic retro-pop inspired rock n roll.
“Comprised of a core group of high school friends from Norfolk, Virginia, the Monbacks have taken their high-energy live show on the road for the past two years, touring continuously up and down the East Coast and extensively throughout the Southeast as an 8-piece touring ensemble that includes a two, sometimes three, piece horn section. This live aesthetic was an essential part of what the band tried to capture on their debut album, recording primarily live onto analog tape at Welcome to 1979 in Nashville, TN. However, for their upcoming record, the band will shift its focus to creating a more cohesive studio record that takes full advantage of White’s production style and experience.
“The band will record the album at Montrose Recording Studio in Richmond, Virginia. They will also utilize White’s own Spacebomb studios, also in Richmond, where White self-produced and released his debut album Big Inner as well as Natalie Prass’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. White’s Big Inner was called “one of the great albums of modern Americana” by Uncut Magazine and he was named eMusic’s Breakthrough Artist of 2012, Paste Magazine’s Best New Act of 2012, and Consequence of Sound Rookie of the Year before being signed to Domino Records and re-releasing the album worldwide in 2013.
“The Monbacks have a five-month tour of the United States planned to begin in late April after they finish recording the new album, with festival performances at Firefly Music Festival (Dover, Delaware), LAVA Fest (Suffolk, Virginia), Rooster Walk (Martinsville, Virginia), Tuck Fest (Charlotte, North Carolina), and many more to be announced soon.”
